US turned Manas into spy haven: Report

Washington has employed its sole air base in Central Asia in a large-scale spying campaign, according to Russian state television.

A clip of a documentary to be aired on Sunday will allegedly show how the US ran intelligence operations from its Manas air base in Kyrgyzstan. The White House claims it used the base to supply the troops it led in Afghanistan.

"Eight years ago under the pretext of the war in Afghanistan the United States opened its air base at the Manas airport," reads a Rossiya television statement. "But this was only the start. Subsequently the Americans in Kyrgyzstan launched a wide-scale intelligence operation."

The clip comes just days after the first meeting between Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and US President Barack Obama.

Washington set up Manas just outside the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek at the beginning of the US invasion of Afghanistan allegedly to help supply NATO forces in Afghanistan.

In February, Kyrgyzstan ordered the eviction of US troops and urged the closure of the Manas air base within a six-month time span.

The decision to shut Manas has been seen as a blow to Washington, as President Barack Obama plans to increase the number of American troops in Afghanistan.

The Russian clip is also expected to prove that the United States created a special team of spies in Bishkek to pursue local politicians and keep Kyrgyz counter-intelligence off the scent of the CIA agents.

The espionage was, according to the program, carried out on the territory of the sovereign state, Kyrgyzstan, and with disregard for all the norms of international law.

A US defense official who spoke on condition of anonymity dismissed the accusations as ridiculous and claimed that the report surfaced amid US and Kyrgyz efforts to resume dialogue over the future of the base.

US officials hope to keep Manas but Bishkek has affirmed that its decision to close the base is final.
